Butter in the Coffee

I accidentally dropped a pat of butter in my coffee this morning. My last coffee - no beans left. I seriously considered fishing the butter out and drinking it anyway. I didn't, but I really thought about it. Yuck. Does that make me a gross person?

This presents an interesting dilemma, one which I'm sure has vexed humanity for eons.

What has always stood out in my mind is it would have been perfectly acceptable to eat the butter and drink the coffee if the butter had been on a piece of toast instead of doing the back stroke. Some people - and I'm not saying who, but they know who they are - even go so far as to dip their butter-laden confections into their java before chowing down.

I don't say this to elicit "ewwwwww"-like reactions. I do so to highlight how focused we seem to be on the order in which things are consumed. As my pediatrician once told my Mom after she freaked that I was eating my desserts first, it all gets mixed up in our tummies anyway.

Next time, don't even bother fishing it out. Just enjoy it for the uniquely flavored and textured unintentional creation that it is.

Carmi - your prose are like butter! Ah, if only I had half your writing ability, I'd be done my stinking novel by now!

butter is just a dairy product. You could have considered it extra flavoring. ;-) My friend always liked pepper on her French fries and things, so it would not surprise me if there are people who like butter in their coffee. )And it is still caffeine, lol)
